HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rainwater quality changed by time and spatial locations.
  • Daphnia magna immobilization acute toxicity test was performed.
  • Some rainwater samples resulted in toxic to Daphnia magna.
  • Rainwater quality displayed a varying range of contaminants measured.
  • A significant dependence was found between pH and NH4+, and between toxicity and arsenic.

ABSTRACT

Rainwater harvesting has become an alternative water resource where the water scarcity is the major problem. However, the quality of harvested rainwater is related closely to anthropogenic activities, as well as the medium of collection such as roof material and surface activity. This study aimed to survey physico-chemical parameters (Electro-conductivity (EC), Ammonia, TKN and pH) and metals to cause ecotoxicity in rainwater. The samples were collected from different points (in the city center, traffic affected and outer zones of the city), different types (surface contact, non-surface contact and roof), in three locations of Tekirdağ city (Çorlu, Hayrabolu and Tekirdağ city center) and in different times (May to December, 2012). Daphnia magna immobilization acute toxicity test was performed. Rainwater quality displayed a varying range of contaminants measured by means of sample origin, location and collection period. Some of 17 samples exhibited severe toxicity to D. magna (>50% of immobilization). A significant dependence was found between pH and NH4+, among the parameters of EC, Ca and Mg as well as between toxicity and arsenic.
