ABSTRACT

Degradation of paracetamol by thin film (TF) photocatalytic oxidation was investigated under different process parameters by using a coated tubular quartz reactor (TQR). TF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). A central composite design was also used to investigate the combined effect of initial paracetamol (acetaminophen, PAM) and H2O2 concentrations, pH and the photocatalytic reaction time. Kinetic rate of PAM degradation was obtained as 13.3x10-3 min-1 by using TF based UV/H2O2 system. Maximum paracetamol degradation can obtain as 87.9% at 70 mg/L, 66 µL/L, 7.4 and 123 min for paracetamol concentrations, H2O2 concentration, pH and photocatalytic reaction time, respectively. TF provides to increase kinetic rate for 4.3 times and also PAM removal was increased 2.2 times comparing the UV/H2O2 process. Obtained results indicated that the TF based photocatalytic process was appropriate to remove paracetamol.
