  • Environmental implication of ENPs is one of the major concerns in scientific research world.
  • ENPs could have toxic effects on aquatic organisms (e.g., fish and invertebrates) and human health.
  • The ability of ENPs to translocate from one compartment to another is a key factor in their toxicity.
  • Appropriate technologies to identify ENPs might help in early detection of ENPs exposure.
  • Toxicity and life cycle assessment of ENPs in human and environment may help to reduce the problem.

ABSTRACT

At present engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are of great scientific interest both for technological applications and environmental impacts. There are many scientific literatures which provide evidences of negative impacts of ENPs on aquatic organisms. Toxic effects of ENPs in aquatic system may affect the human health. The behaviour of ENPs in the aquatic environment is not properly understood due to the complexity of the aquatic system and lack of baseline data. In situ scientific research is needed for better understanding. This review article provides a holistic view on different issues of ENPs in aquatic system, such as, their entry routes and impacts on aquatic organisms. It also highlights the risk of ENPs exposure to human health via contaminated aquatic systems and control strategies.
